Phenibut, sold under the brand names Anvifen, Fenibut, and Noofen among others, is a central nervous system depressant with anxiolytic and sedative effects which is used in Russia, Ukraine, and Latvia for the treatment of anxiety, insomnia, and a variety of other indications. It is not approved for use in the United States or Europe, but it is sold over the Internet as a supplement and used as a recreational drug and purported nootropic. Phenibut is structurally related to the neurotransmitter -aminobutyric acid (GABA), and hence is a GABA analogue.
